Continuing Education Committee

Minutes June 7, 2006

Current and Future Workshops

Workshops are set through August.  Member feedback has indicated that there have been too many competing options for training over the last several months.  The committee has agreed that aiming to offer one workshop each week is sufficient.

At the Co-op Director’s Association, Directors are discussing offering more coordinated training. Our committee likes the idea of centering training on issues that will help members achieve QSAC levels.  Gail will bring this idea to the Coop Directors and report back.

It was suggested that we offer workshops more than once each year, perhaps two or three times, so that members have more options for participation.

The traveling workshop proposal was approved for presentation to the board.

Council Meetings

The format, time and place for Council meetings was discussed.  The committee recommends the following set of changes to Council meetings:

Future meetings, starting with the meeting in October, will rotate around to member libraries instead of being held at the Coop, legislators will be invited to attend, and meetings will be held earlier in the day.

The October Council meeting needs to be rescheduled as it conflicts with MLA.  The committee is considering dates after the elections are held in November, to maximize opportunities with new legislators.

MelCat Catalog Training

MLC offers training on cataloging in MelCat at a cost of $70 per participant.  It was decided that the co-op will host a training to help members prepare their cataloging records for MelCat, and offer scholarships to cover part of the cost, to encourage member participation.  General cataloging good practices will also be covered.

During a conversation about MelCat, the committee decided that it would be a good idea to provide members with the opportunity to observe a library that is already on MelCat.  Gail will work with Andrews University to arrange a couple of field trips for members to have a chance to see MelCat ILL in operation.

Nominations

Four committee members are up for replacement this year; Bonnie Kliss, Meg King-Sloan, Maude Moore, and Lori Yech.  Maude and Lori agreed to stay on with the committee.  The committee would like to add a member from a school, and someone from a college or university, to help serve the needs of those members.  Gail will work via e-mail with the committee to secure some volunteers.
