It is very important for the first 2 characters of the 007 field to be correct

Cost

Participation is at no additional cost, for now.  The MelCat contract with LM calls for adding up to 550 libraries, after that point additional libraries may be charged.  It is a good idea to get in the queue now.

Work Load

Libraries report that patrons do not abuse the service.  There is a clear advantage to patrons in enhanced service with additional materials available.  Libraries do report the work flow and processes change considerably, and additional work is created.  This makes sense in that additional services and materials are being provided to patrons. For non NCIP libraries, there will be a need for double check in and check out of materials.  This is not unlike what we do with Agent currently.

Patron initiated requests are a change.  It was suggested that libraries start to use that feature in Agent to get adjusted to that piece.   Packaging time increases.

Training

It is very important to make sure that the people who are actually doing the work of Ill and circulation attend the trainings. Catalogers should start attending the MLC MelCat Cataloging trainings now.

To train patrons libraries may use the promotional materials that come free from Mel.  There is a video that was created by a high school student that is very good, and Woodlands is looking into getting permission to use that.

Application Forms

Need to be signed by Library Director.  It doesn’t require a board action, but boards should be consulted.  Gail will be available to talk with your boards about the issues around MelCat, and the need for participation.  Signing up does not constitute a contract.  Application to participate in MelCat merely saves you a place, and a time for going in.  It can be changed or withdrawn.

Going Forward

Task force present formal report at next Council meeting

Members raise any issues/ questions/ concerns

Task Force members work with individual libraries on “hand-holding”

Gail will follow up with libraries on submitting their applications

Gail will leave time in her schedule to work with library boards

Libraries are starting to experience patrons walking in and asking “why don’t we have MelCat?”  We are at an advantage, as we are already participating with Mel Delivery, a requirement for participation with MelCat.

The co-op will work with MLC to maximize training opportunities.

SMLC libraries have an issue with free internet from Comcast and static IP addresses.  They are afraid to rock the boat and get charged for their Internet.

Co-ops will get instructions from MLC on uploading procedures by automation system, and share those.

Lost materials – the default setting of charge for lost library materials is $100, so it is important to provide that information for your library when asked, or the default setting will be entered.

Co-ops will need to train members on how to access MARC records when AGENT is gone.
